WELCOME SPEECH by Dato Azman Ching

Honorary and Distinguished guests, Professor Dr. Dino Wong Founder and President of UCIC, National Franchise of UCIC, Course Instructors, Parents and our beloved children, and fellow members from around the world, welcome to the 22nd UCMAS Abacus & Mental Arithmetic International Competition 2017 and I-maths International Competition, WELCOME TO MALAYSIA!

It is my honor to be invited and to address the welcome speech for this wonderful event here at this wonderful place. This year of 2017 ends with a splendid International competition with more than 2250 participating from over 77 countries. Congratulations! Big applause to UCMAS.

As we all know, abacus, or suanpan, or sempoa, is an ancient wisdom of the Chinese ethnic. We have always heard of how Chinese shines when it comes to mathematical related matters, especially business dealings, where dollar and cents count. So, get a good Chinese business partner, as they can help you manage your cost effectively and increase your profit margin in ways you might never think of. Right, Dr. Dino?

It is a known fact that Chinese are good at calculations, which could be one of the reasons they strive not only in the business world but also contributing in many aspects of science and technologies, where complex equations and formulas are used. All these begins with a solid foundation in handling numbers and calculations.

For me, the theme ‘Bringing the World Together’ for this mega event itself is such an optimist enthusiasm for all of us to stride to be more magnificent in the coming years. I believe that when we are together, we are able to prepare for the brighter future for our children. Indeed, UCMAS has benefitted billion children around the world with their brain’s ability especially in speedy calculation where I am amaze in seeing how an ancient Chinese calculation tool help improvise our children learning curve in today modern civilization. This is where UCMAS strive. Throughout the years, they had produced batches of excellent graduates who are doing well in mental arithmetic, both locally and internationally.

Apart from that, UCMAS is more that math. The syllabus and module are great innovations of education that is proven to enhance your children’s brain in their concentration, observation, memory, imagination, improve their power of application, and develop their judgment. Hence, today is the day that we can witness their brain’s ability by sitting in this competition.

Ladies and gentlemen, we Malaysian are very blessed. Our multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural background made us who we are today. Look at excellent Malaysian like Dr. Dino, he is one of the living examples of how we leverage our linguistic capabilities and bring our expertise to the world, for the good of mankind, and for creating a better world for our children.

What we are laying today, through the right education for our children, is a way of thinking and creative information processing method. We nurture the young emotionally, intellectually, and physically through mental arithmetic. It is part of social development, for the long run.

UCMAS, under Dr. Dino’s lead, has been doing a great job by translating the knowledge of abacus and mental arithmetic into multiple languages, and share it out to the world, wholeheartedly. It feels good to be here to witness the participation of our children in this part of education. Their success in mental arithmetic will definitely shape part of their capabilities when they come to lead our societies in the future.

With that, I end my speech with a message to our leaders of tomorrow:

This is more than a competition where it will be the stepping stone for you to motivate yourself, to do your best for your future undertakings. With great power comes great responsibilities. Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. The world owes you nothing. It was here first. Wish you all the best in pursuing your dream.

Again, congratulations to UCMAS for successfully organizing this event.

（吉隆坡日讯）首相署巴生国会协调官拿督郑有文表示，珠心算是中华古老智慧，间接成就今日华人在全世界经商有道，应当受到大力推广。

他说，华人擅长于经商与算术，大家常说只要有一名华人商业伙伴，这盘生意必定能有效掌控成本，而且还能增加利润。

“不只在商场，华人也在科学工艺领域有不错的发展，因为这方面也需要复杂的方程式与演算。华人对数字的敏感与计算基础，应当与其他人士分享其中要诀，并推广至全世界。”

郑有文也是马来西亚文化暨经济促进会总会长。他为“2017年第22届优仕珠心算国际赛暨I-maths国际赛”主持开幕致词时，这么指出。

这项大赛共获得77个国家，合共2250名参赛者参与，并以“把世界联系在一起”（Bringing the World Together）为主题。

郑有文说，大赛主题切合当今世界的趋势，而优仕珠心算国际教育中心（UCMAS）通过推广中华古老的算盘，结合现代的学习方式，让珠心算成为世界通行，无国界的计算法。

“其创新的教育方式有助强化孩子的专注力、观察力、记忆力、想象力、实践能力与判断力。”

他说，在马来西亚多元种族、多元宗教与多元文化的国情下，人民占有语言的优势，是培养世界专才的摇篮。

“UCMAS创办人兼国家总裁黄汉琞，便是其中最好的典范。他把珠心算发展成为联系世界的‘语言’，而且毫无保留地与世界分享珠心算的要诀，提升国家社会未来主人翁的能力。”
